It is designed for long-range detection of air targets of aircraft-helicopter type on very low altitudes as well as of surface vessels, for their tracking and automatic transmission of data to ground and ship-based control stations. Ka-31 ship-based helicopter is designed for airstrike defense of combat vessels’ units operating outside of coastal radar and AEW airplane coverage. It is a modification of Ka-29 helicopter and is equipped for surveillance and airstrike defense of the combat vessels’ units.
It is designed for detecting surface as well as air targets (including low altitude targets near the ground or the sea surface) and automatic transmission of the information about them to combat ships and land-based air defense systems. Ka-31 has no other counterparts in the world helicopter industry. Construction of Ka-31 allows to base this helicopter either on the ground and on the ships of various types, including the ones fitted for Ka-27 and Ka-29. It is also possible to use Ka-31 in a ground-based variant for air defense of the ground forces.
